Ghazala Jamil is Assistant Professor at the Centre for the Study of Law and Governance, Jawaharlal Nehru University (2015 onwards). She was an Associate Fellow at Council for Social Development, New Delhi (2014-2015) and Assistant Professor at the Department of Social Work, University of Delhi (2009-2014). She has also taught at the Departments of Regional Planning and Urban Planning, School of Planning and Architecture (SPA), New Delhi as Visiting Faculty. She has a Masters degree in Social Work from Jamia Millia Islamia and a PhD in Social Work from the University of Delhi. Prior to being in academia, Ghazala worked with various development organisations and grassroot groups. In 2004-05 she also worked with the SRUTI Fellowship Programme team.
Ghazala is the author of Accumulation by Segregation (Oxford University Press, 2017) and Muslim Women Speak (Sage-Yoda Press, 2018). She has edited a volume on women’s rights in India titled Women in Social Change: Visions, Struggles and Persisting Concerns (Sage, 2021) and co-translated a popular history of Delhi Once there was a City called Dilli (Yoda Press 2017). Apart from several book chapters and journal articles, her writings have also appeared in Scroll.in, The Wire, Outlook, Frontline, The Telegraph, Hindustan Times and The Indian Express. Her current research interests include Contemporary Urbanisms, Culture Politics and Critical Governance Studies.
