Poonam Muttreja is one of the founders of Dastkar, a society that aims at improving the economic status of craftspeople; and co-founder of Nagrik Ekta Manch, a relief effort that helped Sikhs victimised by the 1984 violence. Prior to joining PFI in 1994, she worked briefly with UNDP in India. Poonam Muttreja is also the Director of MacArthur’s India Office, overseeing their Population & Reproductive Health grants in India.She has conducted courses on development and policy making in several universities across the world. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, Muttreja directed an environmental program concerned with orienting policy makers on issues of development, environment and poverty (1986-1992). She also taught courses on social action and human development at both Hampshire College in Maine and Earlham College (Fall 1992) in Indiana.

Muttreja has a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government and a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Delhi.
